Poetry Out Loud State Champion

Cecilia Ergueta, a junior from Wilmington Friends School, will represent Delaware in the 2017 Poetry Out Loud Nation Championships this month in Washington, D.C. She earned high scores from the judges at the state finals on Feb. 28 with her recitation of “The True-Blue American” by Delmore Schwartz. Ergueta will receive $200 and an all-expenses paid trip for her and a chaperone to the Poetry Out Loud national championships on April 25-26. In addition to her winnings, Ergueta earned a $500 stipend for Wilmington Friends School to purchase materials related to poetry.

The first runner-up in the state championships was Shayln Littlejohn from Hodgson Vo-Tech High School, followed by Sam McGarvey from Tall Oaks Classical High School.

Poetry Out Loud is a state competition that encourages high school students to get involved with poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. For more information on Poetry Out Loud and Delaware Arts, visit outartsdel.org.
