The Delaware Art Museum will display a Frank Schoonover painting that was featured on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow, filmed at Winterthur last year. The painting, originally published with the caption “At a Hail from the Boat He Went to the Rail,” is an illustration from the 1923 book Privateers of ’76, a tale of a Massachusetts boy and his adventures at sea during the American Revolution. The painting will be on display in the museum’s American illustration gallery for the next five months. The owner’s family purchased the painting directly from Schoonover, for $300 in June 1960. During the Antiques Roadshow segment, the owner described his father’s love of illustrated books, and how his mother saved for two years to purchase a work from Schoonover’s Rodney Street studio in Wilmington.
